An unintended expat blogger behind PlainVelvetNest

Hi there, I'm Eva

I work as a project manager. I'm a parent. An expatriate based in Dusseldorf, Germany.

A few years back I moved here with my family. What began as a short-term assignment gradually became a new phase of life abroad.

How It Began

Moving to Germany didn't appear in the grand plan. Like many international moves, it started as a job opportunity and soon grew into something far larger.

The initial months were demanding — new systems, new routines, new expectations. Everyday tasks felt more convoluted than expected.

The Adjustment Period

There was culture shock, uncertainty, and a lot of learning by doing. Yet gradually, routines took shape. We found places that suited us, met other families, and began building something that felt steady.

Why I Created PlainVelvetNest

Most online information was either corporate relocation advice or superficial tourism content. What was missing was a candid, everyday family perspective.

This site aims to close that gap — practical guidance drawn from real-life in Germany.

What This Site Does (And Doesn’t)

This site is:

  • Practical knowledge gained from living in Germany
  • Centered on family life and day-to-day realities
  • Updated when something genuinely changes

This site isn’t:

  • Not a tourism authority resource
  • A paid-review platform
  • Just another generic travel blog

Looking Forward

Our stay in Germany continues, and so does the learning journey. As long as the information remains useful, I’ll keep recording what we discover.

If you have inquiries about family life in Dusseldorf or anywhere in Germany, please don't hesitate to contact me.

With best regards,

Eva
